Objective:To compare BIS values during standardized sevoflurane anaesthesia in children with end-tidal sevoflurane concentration, haemodynamic parameters and the speed of recovery. Design:Clinical prospective observational study. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine of P. J. ©afárik University, Koąice, Slovakia. Materials and methods:96 children scheduled for elective surgery under general anaesthesia were included in the study. They were divided into 2 age groups (1-3 and 3-15 years of age). Objective:To evaluate the use of muscle relaxants in the anaesthetic departments in the Czech Republic. Design:Prospective, multicentre, questionnaire, correspondence study. Settings:Anaesthetic departments, Czech Republic. Material and methods:We posted a structured questionnaire regarding the use and choice of muscle relaxants depending on the length of surgery to the heads of 140 Czech departments of anaesthesia. We were also interested in the methods and techniques of neuromuscular blockade monitoring and the dose regimens for block reversal by neostigmine. Descriptive statistics were used...

Authors describe a case of complicated tonsillectomy. Late massive bleeding from tonsillar bed followed by hemorrhagic shock and unconsciousness occurred in a young otherwise healthy patient who underwent tonsillectomy in a small hospital. The patient was transferred to the department of surgery of regional hospital where urgent surgery was performed. As ENT specialist was not immediately available, unsuccessful attempt to control bleeding was accomplished by a surgeon and the patient was then transferred to the ENT Department of the University Hospital Olomouc where the bleeding was successfully controlled and patient's circulation stabilized. The...
Oxygen toxicity in the course of hyperbaric oxygenotherapyIntensive Care Medicine - Original Paper
M. Hájek
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2007;18(2):96-102
Objective:Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is based on breathing pure oxygen under pressure higher than the ambient pressure. Signs of toxicity can occur due to the presence of oxygen and nitrogen reactive substances during exposure to high doses of oxygen. Aim of study:To find the incidence of oxygen toxicity in patients treated in our centre in 1994-2005. Design:Observational retrospective study. Results:4,164 patients underwent total 48,992 treatment sessions in the period studied. Thirteen cases of toxicity occurred in 7 patients. The most dramatic symptom of oxygen CNS toxicity - hyperoxia-induced...
Prospectives of antimicrobial therapy in the near and far futureIntesive Care Medicine - Review Article

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2007;18(2):103-112
At present the most important problem of antimicrobial therapy is acquired resistance in every category of micro-organisms. The solution to this problem lies in research of new antimicrobial therapeutics (antibiotics) in the groups of drugs used for a long time and research into new groups. An important inspiration for this undertaking comes from basic research of plants mainly from tropical forests and human antimicrobial agents (cathelicidines, defensines). However, this approach does not suffice due to the rapid development of resistance of the micro-organisms and therefore the shortening lifespan of new antibiotics. Other options are considered...

Many manuals appeared after the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia on 16th October 1846 to give basic information about the use of ether for those who wanted to use it in clinical practice. Some of the earliest handbooks survived and are still available. One of them is the booklet "Remarks on the proper mode of administration of sulphuric ether" from WTG Morton, published in 1847. It is displayed at the National Library of Medicine, USA for public use.
