Letos slaví krásné 125. narozeniny dvě sloučeniny, které se obě zrodily téměř ve stejnou dobu v laboratořích firmy Bayer. Ačkoliv obě látky vznikly i stejnou metodou - acetylací, jejich pověst i osudy jsou diametrálně odlišné. Jako u biblických bratří Kaina a Abela, jedna z nich získala prokletí a druhá je stále oslavována jako dobrodiní pro lidstvo. V létě r. 1897 byla syntetizována kyselina acetylsalicylová - acylpyrin a o několik dní později diacetylmorfin - heroin (obr. 1). Je přitom zajímavé, že na samém začátku byla preferována látka druhá. O tom, který preparát je vhodný pro komerční využití, primárně rozhodoval profesor Dreser, vedoucí farmakologické části firmy Bayer. Ten acylpyrin zprvu odmítnul jako obecně neužitečný a navíc s možnou kardiotoxicitou, ale diacetylmorfin nadšeně přivítal z hlediska jeho obchodního potenciálu. Veřejnost totiž urgentně potřebovala nový lék především na potlačení kašle, který sužoval mnoho lidí v důsledku bronchitid, tuberkulózy, astmatu a pneumonie a současně by nebyl návykový jako morfin [1].
