The year 2020 was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a number of papers were published during this period regarding the diagnosis and support of failing organ systems (respiratory, cardiovascular) but also sepsis, renal replacement and the general issue of providing general intensive care of high quality.

The year 2020 was significantly influenced by the world SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In the area of science and research, one of the consequences of the pandemic was the COVID-19 publication boom. Although the COVID-19 disease remains to be significant worldwide healthcare and also an economic issue, it could not be considered as the only topic in clinical anaesthesiology practice. The Top anaesthesiology publications in 2020 aimed to summarise and highlight the key publication in the field of anaesthesiology and also to point out the articles that the anesthesiologist should be familiar with in their daily clinical practice.

Regional anesthesia is undergoing technological change from electro stimulation to ultrasound era. By its creative nature it is resistant to be tighten up by evidence-based recommendations at least at this stage of development. Existing guidelines tend to be local in nature and are tailored to individual hospitals rather than countries or regions. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, set a precedent. ASRA (American Society of Regional Anesthesia) and ESRA (European Society of Regional Anesthesia) have issued joint COVID-19 Guidance for Regional Anesthesia.

Post-acute intensive care is intended for treatment and rehabilitation of patients who still need life-sustaining treatment (usually mechanical ventilation) after successful management of an acute phase of a disease. The goal of the therapy can be either weaning of arteficial ventilation or change and support of care with some type of home mecanical ventilation support (invasive or non-invasive). The probability of weaning from mechanical ventilation is much lower in paediatric patients as the disease spectrum associated with chronic respiratory failure also significantly differs.
