Objective: The aim of this publication was to describe the occurrence of malignant hyperthermia (MH) in the Czech and Slovak populations, including genetic results and reasons for reporting to the MH diagnostic centre. Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting: Academic Centre of Malignant Hyperthermia of Masaryk University. Material and methods: All probands referred to our MH diagnostic centre from 2002 to 2022 were enrolled. Each proband was a representative of one unrelated family. Probands were investigated according to diagnostic guidelines valid at the time of reporting by molecular genetic testing and muscle in vitro contraction...

The concept of prediction of fluid responsiveness - the ability of the heart to increase cardiac output in a response to a fluid bolus, has become a popular choice to guide fluid resuscitation in case of circulatory failure. Stroke volume variation (SVV) and pulse pressure variation (PPV) are dynamic parameters frequently used to predict fluid responsiveness that have been shown to be accurate in a number of studies. In the operating theatre, but mainly in the setting of intensive care unit, there are multiple factors that decrease PPV/SVV reliability or make their use even impossible. Firstly, the choice of monitoring technique can influence PPV/SVV...

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is an acute inflammatory disease of the lung parenchyma acquired outside the healthcare facilities or within 48 hours after admission to the hospital. Despite the availability of antibiotics, pneumonia remains the leading cause of death from infectious causes, according to World Health Organization data. Although it might seem that the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections is a closed chapter in a medical textbooks, it is quite the opposite. Our perception of pneumonia as a unifying diagnosis comes with a burden of heterogeneity and we need to approach each patient individually, based on their disease-specific...
Prognostic scores in the ICU
Harazim M.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2023;34(3):120-124 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2023.043
Prognostic scoring systems are employed in the intensive care unit to predict the outcome of our treatments, to characterize the severity of disease or organ dysfunction, or for comparisons in scientific research. This review article outlines the history and introduction of frequently utilized scoring systems in intensive care units. It aims to demonstrate performance and future directions, emphasizing the significance of prognostic models not only in publications but also for enhancing resource usage and improving the provided care.
