Oral hygiene as a key component of ventilator‑associated pneumonia prevention bundle: a summary and critical appraisal of guidelines and recommended practices in 2023Review Article
- Klinika anesteziologie a resuscitace 3. LF UK a FNKV Praha
Oral care is a daily routine in modern times and an integral part of oral health care. While in a hospital - standard ward - setting, it depends on the self-reliance of the patient, in the intensive care setting, the patient is completely dependent on the nursing staff. Oral care, including oral decontamination, has an invaluable role in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. However, nursing guidelines in this area are not uniform and still involve the use of chlorhexidine-based antiseptic solutions, which are not currently recommended by scientific societies. The answer to the question is still unknown whether the routine use of chlorhexidine in the oral cavity is safe for our critically ill patients and what might be the most appropriate alternative.
Keywords: critical care, nursing care, ventilator‑associated pneumonia, oral care, decontamination.
