Influence of age on the pharmacodynamic parameters of cisatracurium, rocuronium and vecuronium in males during total intravenous anaesthesia - a prospective studyAnaesthesiology - Original Paper
Adamus Milan
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):78-84
Objective:To compare the pharmacodynamics of cisatracurium, rocuronium and vecuronium following a single dose in young and elderly males during TIVA. Design:Clinical, prospective, controlled, randomized study. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology, University Hospital. Materials and methods:Following ethics committee approval and patients' informed consent, 240 males of two age groups (20-40, 60-75 years) received cisatracurium, rocuronium or vecuronium (2×ED95). For each patient, neuromuscular monitoring (TOF, electromyography) determined the onset time (maximal T1 depression), clinical duration...
The effect of transversus abdominis plane block on post-operative pain relief: a prospective auditAnaesthesiology - Original Paper
P. Mcaleavey Francis, Michálek Pavel, Pokorný Lukáš, Periketi Dayakar
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):85-90
Objective:The tranversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is a relatively new regional anaesthesia technique for provision of analgesia following abdominal surgery. Local anaesthetic is injected into the plane between transversus abdominis and the internal oblique muscles. The TAP block can be performed employing either a landmark technique or with ultrasound guidance. The goal of this audit was to ascertain the quality of postoperative analgesia following abdominal surgery in patients in whom the TAP block had been employed, patient satisfaction with analgesia and complication rate of the technique. Design:Prospective audit. Settings:Department...
First Aid Courses (basic life support) for parents of pre-term newborns - a retrospective analysis of questionnairesResuscitation - Original Article

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):91-94
Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the participants' retrospective feedback on the courses. Design:Retrospective analysis. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Department of Paediatrics, University Hospital. Materials and methods:We analysed 100 questionnaires in this retrospective study. The questionnaires were filled in by the pre-term newborns' parents who took the first aid course between October 2006 and January 2009. The participants answered eight questions on a five degree scale. We analysed the results using descriptive statistics methods. Results:One...

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):95-103
Objective:Coupled plasma filtration adsorption (CPFA) was developed as an adsorptive hemopurification method aimed at nonselective removal of circulating soluble mediators potentially involved in the pathogenesis of sepsis. We hypothesized that this nonselective hemopurification could protect from detrimental consequences of long-term, volume-resuscitated porcine septic shock. Design and setting:Randomized, controlled experimental study. Materials and methods:In sixteen anesthetized and mechanically ventilated piglets hyperdynamic septic shock secondary to peritonitis was induced by intraperitoneal...
Multimodal monitoring in neurointensive care of severe traumatic brain injuryIntesive Care Medicine - Review Article

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):104-111
The therapy of traumatic brain injury consists of prevention and therapy of secondary injury. Proper and early diagnosis is necessary for adequate treatment. Standard monitoring methods in today's neurointensive care include clinical observation, intracranial pressure monitoring and repeated brain CT scans. During the last 10 years, new methods have been implemented in clinical practice that can improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of brain injury and provide early diagnosis of secondary trauma. These methods include tissue oxymetry, microdialysis and brain tissue blood flow. Their common application constitutes so called multimodal monitoring....

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2010;21(2):112-115
The author describes the evolution of anaesthesiology that led to the development of the sovereign specialty of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation in Slovakia after the Second World War. Tomáš Kadlic played a crucial role in the forming of the discipline as an educator and founder of the first clinic of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation in Czechoslovakia. The author maps the steps of this evolution and informs about the medals awarded by SSAIM out of respect to the founder of Slovak anaesthesiology.
