Ultrasound-guided procedures are an integral part of interventional pain management. Ultrasound may be used in the outpatient setting, does not burden patients or staff with radiation and allows the visualisation of the needle passage and important anatomical structures in real time. The performed procedures include blocks of peripheral plexuses and nerves, the caudal block, interfascial applications, paravertebral blocks, interventions on the cervical and sacral sympathetic structures, injections to the cervical nerve roots, blockades of the facet joint innervation at the cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels, administration to the shoulder or hip joint, and injections to the periarticular structures and tendons. Ultrasound may also be used for diagnostic purposes in chronic pain management.
