The article presents the current view of the Section for obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia ČSARIM (SPAA ČSARIM) on the organization of interdisciplinary collaboration during the provision of anaesthesiology care in the delivery room on the basis of the results of studies Obstetric Anaesthesia and Analgesia Month Attributes 2011 and 2015 (OBAAMA-CZ and OBAAMA-INT). The issue is often seen as a marginal one, yet in our opinion it is the key factor for expansion of modern anaesthetic methods into the daily routine in the delivery room and ensuring maximum safety of care for the parturient.

Objective:This study aimed to obtain recent epidemiological data on hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in intensive care patients and to determine adequate empirical antimicrobial therapy. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care Medicine. Patients and methods:The prospective, multicenter, observational study assessed the spectrum of detected bacterial pathogens and their resistance to antimicrobial agents. It was compared with a reference approach to initial antibiotic therapy in early- and late-onset HAP. Results:Total 317 patients were included in the study. The...

Pulmonary trauma by energy load - ventilator-induced lung injuryIntesive Care Medicine - Review Article

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2017;28(3):163-167

Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is a serious medical condition related to the use of injurious mechanical ventilation (MV). Recent literature outlines a novel perspective on the development of VILI - the mechanical power concept, unifying the static and dynamic variables of MV in relation to the energy load of the respiratory system and VILI. The aim of the text is a brief characteristic of the concept in relation to the recent literature.

Practical application of the results of clinical trialsIntesive Care Medicine - Special Article

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2017;28(3):168-175

Intensive Care Medicine is a field in which the outcome depends on many factors. Clinical trials are required to assess the impact of various interventions on outcome. They form the fundamentals of evidence-based medicine but knowing their limitations is necessary for their proper application in clinical practice. Personalized medicine is defined as clinical management based on evidence-based medicine individually tailored to each patient and their response to previous interventions.

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2017;28(3):176-182

Objective:At present, there is still a knowledge gap regarding the epidemiology of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Europe and in the Czech Republic. Therefore, the EuReCa ONE (European Registry of Cardiac Arrest) international epidemiological study was performed to determine the incidence of OHCA, the cardiopulmonary resuscitation process and OHCA outcome throughout Europe. Here we present national data from the Czech Republic. Design:Prospective, observational, multicentre, epidemiological study. Setting:Emergency medical services. Materials and methods:Emergency medical services of...

Statistics in biomedical research IISpecial article

K. Langová, J. Zapletalová, L. Ličman

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2017;28(3):183-187

The article focuses on data processing and data analysis. It briefly describes basic descriptive statistics - measures of central tendency and variability for continuous data. Particular attention is paid to the correct choice of descriptive statistics of central tendency (arithmetic mean, median, modus) and variability (standard deviation and quantiles) regarding data distribution. It explains basic types of data distribution - symmetric, right skewed and left skewed. Attention is paid to the normal Gaussian distribution and its statistical properties. There are various types of distribution for continuous biomedical variables. It describes the...

The authors present an annotated part of a surgical textbook from 1921. The first edition was published in 1917 during WWI. The first part of the textbook concerns anaesthesiology and the text is divided into 5 parts because of the extent (Introduction, Local and Regional Anaesthesia, Intravenous Regional Anaesthesia and Spinal Anaesthesia, General Anaesthesia I and General Anaesthesia II). Each part has been annotated in order to provide historical context of the anaesthetic methods and their origin. The textbook follows the German and Vienna schools of medicine.
