Objective:Birth by Caesarean section is on the increase in Slovakia. General anaesthesia is used in the majority of Caesarean sections. The risk of acid aspiration and its potential development into Mendelson's syndrome is an issue for all clinicians involved in the care of pregnant women. We conducted a retrospective study of anaesthetic practice for Caesarean section in Slovakia over a one-year period from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2005. Design:A retrospective study by postal questionnaire. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine, Faculty Hospital Nitra; department of Gynaecology...
TOF-Watch® SX vs. Datex-Ohmeda M-NMT: A comparison of the TOF-ratio measured with accelerometry or electromyography. A clinical, prospective, controlled study.Anaesthesiology - Original Paper

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2006;17(6):281-286
Objective:To compare the TOF-ratio measured with acceleromyography (ACC) and electromyography (EMG) during cis-atracurium or rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade. To determine the effectiveness of accelerometry for detection of a residual block. Design:Clinical, prospective, comparative, controlled study. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, University Hospital. Materials and Methods:Following local ethics committee approval and obtaining informed consent, 47 patients scheduled for elective surgery under total intravenous anaesthesia with tracheal intubation and muscle...
Physostigmine and its place in modern anaesthesiology and intensive careAnaesthesiology - Comprehensive Report

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2006;17(6):287-294
Physostigmine was isolated from Calabar (ordeal) beans in 1864 and used for glaucoma therapy. Nowadays its main indication is the treatment of the central anticholinergic syndrome which is a relatively common complication of general anaesthesia and analgesic sedation in the ICU. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties and interactions of physostigmine with drugs commonly used in anaesthesia (volatile anaesthetics, propofol, benzodiazepines, opioides and dehydrobenzperidole) are described. A short review of the central anticholinergic syndrome symptoms and therapy is presented. Physostigmine effects on ethyl alcohol intoxication, muscle shivering...
Flumazenil - a specific antagonist of the benzodiazepines at the beginning of the 21st century. Is it needed?Anaesthesiology - Comprehensive Report

Anest. intenziv. Med. 2006;17(6):295-298
Flumazenil was developed in 1979 during a search for new agonists of the benzodiazepine receptor discovered 2 years earlier in 1977. Flumazenil was registered as a benzodiazepine antagonist by Roche (brand name Anexate) in Switzerland in 1987. Similar drugs with longer duration of effect were tested but only Sarmazol is used and that is in veterinary anaesthesia. Other derivates are used in experiments only. The main boom of flumazenil use was in the 80s and early 90s, later on its popularity decreased because of its high cost and short-lasting effect. The main indications for flumazenil are a reversal of the paradoxical reaction to midazolam and antagonism...
Measurement of cardiac output by the pulse contour analysis (LiDCOTM plus) and the partial rebreathing of carbon dioxide (NICO) methods - a prospective comparative studyIntensive Care Medicine - Original Paper
M. Fořtová, K. Šnajdárková
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2006;17(6):299-303
Objective:To determine the cross-correlation of two methods of cardiac output measurement: pulse contour analysis (LiDCOTM plus) and partial rebreathing of carbon dioxide (NICO). Design:Prospective comparative study. Setting:Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Pardubice Hospital. Materials and Methods:The patient population consisted of adult patients admitted to our ICU for mechanical ventilation and pharmacological vasopressor support with a clinical indication for cardiac output (CO) monitoring by LiDCO. Additionally their CO was measured simultaneously by NICO for the duration...
